Asia, home to nearly 60% of the world’s population, continues to be plagued by water, sanitation and hygiene issues. While access to drinking water has steadily improved over the years, that water often contains pathogenic organisms or toxic chemicals, leading to disease and poor hygiene. Open defecation and burning of waste is still common in some Asian countries, resulting in air pollution and further spread of disease. Additionally, more than a million children die each year from diarrheal diseases, which are overwhelmingly attributed to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation and insufficient hygiene.
